The Route for the Motorcycle Tour Pony Express USA + Motorcycle Tour Route 66

The Route:

arrow down Day 1: Los Angeles

Hermann Reuther Welcome

Welcome to Los Angeles. After your individual arrival and the transfer from the airport to the hotel you will get into the mood for your motorcycle tour on and along the legendary Pony Express Trail and the event of the year - the Harley-Davidson 115th anniversary celebrations in Milwaukee.

arrow down Day 2: Los Angeles > Morro Bay

Solvang

After collecting your Harley-Davidson motorcycle from the rental office you start your trip north along Highway 1 and eventually reach Malibu. You then head into central valley farmlands of California and the coastal hills of the Los Padres National Forest. Travelling through beautiful countryside, you stop at Santa Barbara's Stearns Wharf for lunch before visiting Solvang, the Danish capital of America. Here you will see windmills, horse drawn carriages, horse ranches, and wineries. You continue north through lush green hills, farmland, and cattle ranches before reaching Morro Bay.

arrow down Day 3: Morro Bay > San Francisco

Point Pinos Lighthouse, California

In the morning you continue your ride with the Pacific Ocean on the left and the majestic Santa Lucia mountains on the right. This is the Big Sur, or El Sur Grande, a wonderfully scenic region that we cover during today's ride. Stop at Point Pinos Lighthouse, the entrance to Monterey Bay. Your journey continues through Castroville, where Norma Jean (Marilyn Monroe) was once crowned Artichoke Queen. Finally you reach Half Moon Bay and Pacifica, where you head north toward San Francisco and our hotel.

arrow down Day 4: San Francisco > South Lake Tahoe

Golden Gate Bridge

You start the day by riding over the Golden Gate Bridge and a photo stop. Passing Sacramento you travel to Placerville, a gold rush town, and then on to Camino in the heart of the El Dorado Wine Country. Your route now takes you through the Eldorado National Forest and into South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, where the California - Nevada State Line can be found. If you feel like trying your luck, Stateline has many world-class casinos.

arrow down Day 5: South Lake Tahoe > Ely

Austin, Highway 50

Your day begins with a journey through the Toiyabe National Forest toward Genoa, the oldest permanent settlement in Nevada and one of the most attractive villages in the American West. From Genoa you continue north to Carson City. Your destination for the night is Ely, on Highway 50, the loneliest road in the USA...

arrow down Day 6: Ely > Salt Lake City

Highway 50, loneliest road in the USA

Today you are riding through the Salt Lake Desert to the Mormon Capital, to Salt Lake City.

arrow down Day 7: Salt Lake City > Idaho Falls

Idaho Falls, USA

Next to our hotel in Idaho Falls you visit the famous water falls and relax for the next day.

arrow down Day 8: Idaho Falls > Cody

Yellowstone National Park

Early in the morning you leave for the Yellow Stone National Park and spend the whole day in this area. Accommodation is in Cody - for a good reason.

arrow down Day 9: Cody > Gering

Buffalo Bill Museum, Cody

Before leaving the western town Cody, you visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and learn more about the real Wild West of the USA. On your way you stop at Devil's Half Acre and visit the famous Fort Casper.

arrow down Day 10: Gering > Kearney

Chimney Rock

Today you learn more about Scotts Bluff, the Chimney Rock National Park and an Original Pony Express Station in Gothenburg.

arrow down Day 11: Kearney > Des Moines

Pony Express Station, Gothenburg

Your ride leads to Fort Kearney before arriving in Des Moines, your overnight stay for the night.

arrow down Day 12: Des Moines > Chicago

Chicago

You are riding straight to the Chicago area for an overnight stay.

arrow down Day 13: Chicago > Milwaukee

Harley-Davidson Parade Milwaukee

In the morning you are heading north to Milwaukee for the anniversary celebrations of Harley-Davidson. Here you spend the next 3 days and nights. The home of Harley-Davidson will be where it's all happening: entertainment, custom bike show, motorcycle display area, world's largest bike night at the Harley-Davidson Museum, special H.O.G. 35th anniversary celebration and more.

arrow down Day 16: Milwaukee > Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva

You leave Milwaukee and continue on to Lake Geneva for a boat trip on the famous lake. You will spend the night in a hotel with a lake view.

arrow down Day 17: Lake Geneva > Springfield, IL

Gemini Giant, Launching Pad, Wilmington

After a few miles on the Interstate and Highway you will see the first Route 66 street signs near Joliet. Around midday you will reach Wilmington with the Gemini Giant, a large fiberglass figure of the 1960's era. After an obligatory stop at the Dixie Truckers Home, you will end your first day in Spingfield/Illinois, which was for many years the chosen home city of Abraham Lincoln, the president of the United States during the civil war.

arrow down Day 18: Springfield, IL > St. Louis

Gateway Arche, St. Louis

Today is dedicated to the "Gateway to the West": the pioneer town St. Louis. The town's landmark is the more than 190 m high steel Gateway Arch. Inside, you will take trams to an observation platform to the top of the highest monument of the nation. The afternoon in St. Louis is free to your disposal, for dinner we recommend downtown Lakelade's Landing.

arrow down Day 19: St. Louis > Springfield, MO

Meramec Caverns

You deliberately want to do without the unnecessary challenges of confusing streets in the city, bad road conditions and misleading signs to the "Mother Road". You will travel some distances of the tour on the Route 66 and others on the Interstate. Today's highlight and absolute must are the Meramec Caverns. The famous limestone caves have been a tourist classic since the beginning of the Route 66 and served the outlaw Jesse James as a welcome hiding place from his pursuers.

arrow down Day 20: Springfield, MO > Oklahoma City

Route 66 Round Barn

The motto of the day today is: ride, ride and ride namely through three states: Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. The latter is known through countless thunderstorms, the particularly striking red earth and for all Route 66 fans the probably longest continuous route on the Highway 66.

arrow down Day 21: Oklahoma City > Amarillo

Pony Bridge, Canadian River

You will start your day with a real photo highlight: A bridge with 38(!) huge arches spanning the Canadian River. And the Route 66 museum in Clinton that you will visit is a memorial that is different to all others: each room is dedicated to a decade of the "Main Street of America". A further highlight on your tour is the next stop and overnight stay at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo.

arrow down Day 22: Amarillo > Santa Fe

Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo

You continue your adventure tour on the Route 66 to the legendary Cadillac Ranch. As a reminder of the golden days of the Route 66 ten Cadillac's are buried vertically into the ground. Next stop is Adrian, the geo-mathematical center of the old Route 66. This is as important as crossing the equator. Brunch at Russell's Travel Center with its world class Car Museum rounds up the morning. At the end of your eventful day, you will spend the night in historic Santa Fe.

arrow down Day 23: Santa Fe

St. Francis Cathedral, Santa Fe

Today is free to relax in downtown Santa Fe, buying souvenirs and enjoying cafe's and restaurants. A must to see is the St. Francis Cathedral next to the Plaza.

arrow down Day 24: Santa Fe > Gallup

Maggie's Diner, Madrid / Wild Hogs Movie

This morning you check out the original film location of Maggie's Diner from the cult movie "Wild Hogs" with John Travolta in Madrid. After taking a memory picture your tour takes you past Mesas, cottonwood trees and continues on the gentle winding road to Laguna Pueblo where the Spaniards built the mission church, which you will visit. Just in time for dinner, you will reach the hotel El Rancho in Gallup after riding several more beautiful miles through Indian Territory. The heydays are gone, but there once was a time when famous Hollywood stars met up here. Ronald Reagan slept in room 103; Humphrey Bogart in room 213, Doris Day in room 109, Kirk Douglas stayed in 105, Gregory Peck in 111. The Marx brothers resided in room 118, John Wayne recovered in room 100 after a long days ride and for Hermann the German room 101 is regularly reserved for the night.

arrow down Day 25: Gallup > Chinle

Monument Valley

After a hearty breakfast in the "El Rancho" you will drive the former Route 666 to the North, straight through Navajo country. After some 95 appealing miles, you will arrive after passing through Shiprock and Teec Nos Pos to the Four Corners, the single point in the United States, where the boundaries of four states come together: Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. Another highlight on this motorcycle tour is Monument Valley. You will spend the night appropriately in the Navajo reservation near the Canyon de Chelly in Chinle.

arrow down Day 26: Chinle > Flagstaff

Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona

Starting off in Chinle, the first stage leads you to the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert. The more interesting of the two natural wonders is the Petrified Forest, which was formed millions of years ago by a freak of nature. The northern part of the park, the Painted Desert, consists of sedimentary rocks that change color depending on the exposure to the sun going from red to orange to purple. On your journey towards the west ("Go West", is your phrase of the day!), you will pass the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook and cruise on to Winslow, Arizona to Winslow Corner, known from the song by the Eagles. Today's destination is Flagstaff which is located between the two Indian reservations of the Navajo and Hopi on the legendary Route 66. You will end the evening at the Museum Club that the locals call "The Zoo" and which is probably the best dance club between Oklahoma City and Los Angeles.

arrow down Day 27: Flagstaff > Seligman

Grand Canyon

Today's highlight is the gigantic Grand Canyon - if you wish, enjoy a spectacular helicopter flight. After lunch you will cruise over Williams to Seligman. Here the long loop of the old Route 66 begins right up to the Californian border. Even the very old street layout is navigable along this beautiful section. Arriving in Seligman, you will first visit the founder of the "Historic Route 66 Association" at the Route 66 Visitors Center. You will certainly have the opportunity to meet the "Guardian Angel", Angel Delgadillo and perhaps you might be in the mood to receive one of his famous barber shaves. By the way, in his barber shop, you can find many Route 66 souvenirs - a true paradise for bargain hunters. In the evening you will set up your sleeping quarters at a typical Route 66 motel in order to get to know something very simple and rustic.

arrow down Day 28: Seligman > Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada

You will have breakfast today at Westside Lilo's Cafe, an original 66 restaurant owned by an expatriate German, who ensures that all the guests in Seligman are well fed. Through Kingman you continue on to Las Vegas / Nevada and directly on to the Las Vegas Boulevard. The accommodation is booked in the legendary The Mirage which is an ideal starting point for a stroll right on the Strip. Do whatever your heart desires: dine in the Hard Rock Cafe, visit one of the many world-class shows or dive into the nightlife of the city, the afternoon and evening are at your disposal.

arrow down Day 29: Las Vegas > Barstow

Route 66

After a long night, you will start today your "Desert Tour". You will roll past exclusive hotels on the last leg of the Las Vegas Boulevard, and then head off to your day trip in the direction of Barstow. From Needles, California you head back to Route 66, many refer to this as being the most beautiful part of the route. Other stops are the Sahara Oasis and Roy's Cafe in Amboy. Before you arrive in Barstow you will turn a few miles north - if time allows it - to visit an old silver mine in the Mojave Desert in the ghost town of Calico. In the still inhabited and lovingly renovated original Western town over a thousand adventurers once sought their fortune. If you want to you can pick up your very own personal Western photo. A beautiful day and a beautiful trip ends in Barstow. By the way in 1886, the town was named after the president of the Santa Fe railroad company. Barstow also managed to end up in the refrain of the Route 66 classic "Get your kicks".

arrow down Day 30: Barstow > Santa Monica

Santa Monica Pier

The last day "on the road" starts today. From Barstow you will cruise the last miles on Route 66 to Victorville and then take the Interstate straight to Los Angeles where you drop off your Harley at the rental station. Your Route 66 motorcycle tour ends here at the Pier of Santa Monica, where you will spend your last night directly on the promenade...
