On this rental car round trip you will get to know heavenly New Zealand in detail. Your round trip begins on the north island in the largest city of the country in Auckland, City of Sails. From here, you first head north and slowly become accustomed to the left traffic in New Zealand. Over the Bay of Islands, you will reach the Waitangi Treaty Grounds where the birth hour of the modern New Zealand was called out. After the overnight stay in Kaitaia, you will arrive the next morning at the most northern point of the country, Cape Reinga with its distinctive lighthouse. Over the Twin Coast Discovery Highway your round trip leads you through New Zealand to the Waipoua Kauri Forest and through Dargaville and Auckland to the Coromandel peninsula. Overnight stay in Whitianga. The next morning you have the opportunity to visit the so-called Cathedral Cove on the coast before you continue on to Rotorua, which is famous for its sulfurous geysers. In the evening you will find out more about the culture of the Maori natives in Tamaki Village. On the way south, your round trip in New Zealand takes you now to the Lake Taupo, the largest inland lake of the country. An overnight stay near the boardwalk in Napier, the beautiful art deco city. Through the capital Wellington where you can visit the national museum of New Zealand, you will catch the ferry to Picton and therefore reach the south island praised for its natural wonders. Discover the Abel Tasman National Park, the sunny city Nelson and the Pancake Rocks with its famous blow holes. After almost two weeks on your rental car round trip you have now reached the Franz Josef Glacier, which you can view more closely can see on an optional helicopter flight. The more adventurous can go on a quad tour in the rain forest. On the Walter Peak High Country Sheep farm at the Lake Wakatipu, you will get to know New Zealand's most important branch of industry, the sheep breeding better and experience the beautiful landscape all around the town Queenstown. At the end of the rental car round trip one of the biggest highlights of New Zealand awaits you: The beautiful 16 kilometer long Milford Sound. On a cruise through the lovely Fjord landscape, you can experience in the wild penguins, dolphins and whales. After a short trip to the Stewart Island in front of the south coast of New Zealand, you will reach Dunedin before your round trip through New Zealand ends in Christchurch. Return flight home from Christchurch or optional return trip to Auckland.
Day 1: Auckland > Paihia
After you have picked up your rental car from the rental office, you will first need to get used to driving on the left side. However, you will get to enjoy an incredibly beautiful view during your trip from Auckland to Paihia.
Day 2: Paihia > Kaitaia
Today, a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is on the agenda. It is the birthplace of New Zealand. Spend the night in Kaitaia.
Day 3: Kaitaia > Dargaville
Visit the northernmost point of all of New Zealand with your rental car. For the Maori, this is a very special, spiritual place whose energy you will get to experience yourself.
Day 4: Dargaville > Auckland
Today, you cruise down Twin Coast Discovery Highway in order to discover even more of the natural beauty of New Zealand. In the afternoon, you arrive in Auckland, where you can explore the city.
Day 5: Auckland > Whitianga
Today, you take the Pacific Coast Highway, which also awaits with lush green landscapes on either side. Whitianga is your final destination for the day – this is where the British flag was once set on the beach by Captain Cook.
Day 6: Whitianga > Rotorua
The rock cathedral Cathedral Cove is a natural spectacle in and of itself. Enjoy the Maori dances in Tamaki Village in the evening and let yourself be enchanted by the songs of the locals.
Day 7: Rotorua > Napier
In Te Puia, you cannot only get to know the national bird, the kiwi, but geysers as well. In the late afternoon, you arrive in Napier, an art deco city, which had to go through one of the worst earthquakes in New Zealand in 1931, where you will stay near the Marine Parade.
Day 8: Napier > Wellington
Today, you will drive to the capital of New Zealand by rental car. Wellington is waiting for you.
Day 9: Wellington > Nelson
Visit the National Museum of New Zealand. On your way to Nelson, you can take your rental car travel down the very first street of New Zealand.
Day 10: Nelson
From Nelson, you can take a day trip to the Abel Tasman National Park. The trip by water taxi is already an experience in and of itself.
Day 11: Nelson > Greymouth
Today, Buller Gorge Road awaits as one of the most famous streets of all of New Zealand. You will also want to take pictures of the infamous Pancake Rocks.
Day 12: Greymouth > Franz Josef
You will be enchanted by the gold mining town of Ross. The green rainforest and the Southern Mountains are equally impressive. Weather permitting, you can even explore Franz Josef Glacier from the helicopter.
Day 13: Franz Josef > Queenstown
Your trip by rental car leads you to Queenstown. This place is known as the most adventurous city in the country. Your ride along lonely mountain roads will be an adventure in and of itself. The ride with one of the oldest steamships in New Zealand, the TSS Earnslaw, will also wow you.
Day 14: Queenstown > Te Anau
Are you looking for some action? Today, you can enjoy parasailing or bungee jumping, if you so desire. Or how about a jet boat ride? If you find this to be too adventurous, you can also opt for shopping in Queenstown.
Day 15: Te Anau
A true wonder of the world is one the agenda today. Milford Sound is the wettest region in all of New Zealand. The fjord can be explored during a day cruise.
Day 16: Te Anau > Invercargill
Today, you will get to enjoy the magical island of Stewart. Discover many exciting species of birds that you will not find at home.
Day 17: Invercargill > Dunedin
Admire the original motorcycle from the movie "The World's Fastest Indian." In Dunedin, you may subsequently engage in a day of shopping.
Day 18: Dunedin > Christchurch
On the last day of your trip by rental car, you will be driving to Christchurch. Treat yourself to a traditional dinner and look back on the memories of your New Zealand tour.
